Washer Buying Guide

Before you buy a washing machine take a few moments to read our washer buying guide for some important tips and ideas.

Top-Loading Washer
Top-loading washing machines allow you to access the wash tub without having to bend over.
These washers fill the tub with water then agitate the clothing to clean.  Some newer models use wash plates to move the clothing throughout the water.
Top-loading machines are the most common type or washer and offer the greatest selection of models.

Front-Loading Washer
Front-loading washing machines have become popular because of their energy efficiency.  This type uses about 1/3 less water than a top-loader as they only partially fill with water.
These models get clothes clean by tumbling the clothing.  This style has faster spin speeds resulting in clothes drying faster in a shorter period of time.
Front loading machines can often be stacked with a dryer to reduce space.
Most of these washers require special detergent that is readily available in stores.

Think about the size of your family and how often you use the washer.  The more you are able to wash in a single load, the less money and time you will spend. Make sure when selecting a washer it is comparable in capacity to the dryer you own or decide to purchase.
For those with limited space, stackable washer/dryer units are available in both full-size or 'apartment-size' capacities.

Size

Laundry Capacity

Compact (Approx 24" wide) 8-12 pounds (2.5-3.0 cubic feet)

Full-size (Approx. 27" wide)

12-16 pounds (3.0-3.8 cubic feet)

Standard Finishes
The majority of washing machines today are offered in a neutral white finish.  Some models are available in other appealing colors.

Washing machines offer a variety of desirable features.  Here are some you should consider when selecting the best one for your needs.

Washer Cycles.  Most machines offer 4-5 basic washing cycles depending on the type of clothing you are washing.  Advanced machines offer numerous options to customize the wash-cycle based on the types of fabrics and colors you are washing.
Temperature settings.  Standard machines feature basic temperature settings. (Hot/Cold - Warm/Cold - Cold/Cold.)  Advanced models feature multiple temperature settings to ensure the best cleaning options for all types of fabrics.
Automatic Temperature settings adjust water temperature automatically to prevent shrinking and bleeding.
Water Levels.  Standard machines have basic manual water level settings while advanced models use sensors to determine the load size and adjust the water levels appropriately.
Washer Noise reduction.  This is an important feature to look for, particularly if your washer is located near a frequently used living area.  Manufacturers use insulation and other noise reducing technologies to make their washer run more quietly.
Dispensing Systems.  Advanced models feature automatic dispensers that distribute detergent, bleach and fabric softener at the proper time during the was cycle.
Unbalance Sensor.  Advanced models will sense if a load is out of balance and automatically correct the problem by altering the spin of the drum.
Lock-out function.  A desirable feature in homes with small children.
Electronic controls.  One touch buttons to program and select machine options.
Built-in Heater.  Heater boosts water to the correct temperature for optimal cleaning results.
Stainless-steel drums are usually found on high quality machines.  Extreme durability, performance and energy efficiency.
Optional pedestal.  Pedestals may be added to some models to raise the height of the machine to make it easier to load and unload.
Delay-wash feature allows you to complete the wash at a more suitable time, even while you sleep.

Make sure it will fit!
Measure the space that you have available for your new washer.  Know the height, width and depth of the area you want the new model to fit into.  You will also have to factor in the space required if you are also purchasing a dryer.

Efficiency
Washing machines consume a large amount of both energy and water so it is important to purchase one that is energy efficient.  Generally, front-load washers use less energy than top-loading washers.
The energy guide that is packed with every washing machine shows the range of energy consumption in kwh/yr. ENERGY STARŪ qualified models meet the highest quality energy standards.
